Wiki
is a form of online hypertext publication, or online community that is collaboratively edited and managed by it’s own users. Any user is able to add, edit or remove content. A wiki is a content management system. The content of wiki is created without any defined owner or leader. Ward Cunningham,  developed first wiki software WikiWikiWeb and installed it on the internet domainc2.com on March 25,1995. Wikis are enabled by wiki software, otherwise known as wiki engine. Wiki is simply a collection of web pages  that anyone can edit, the most famous example of Wiki  is Wikipedia. Wikis can serve many different purposes both public and private, including knowledge management, note taking, community websites and intranets. DocuWiki, Wikibooks, wikitionary are the other examples. A wiki invites all users to edit any page or to create new pages within the Wiki website, using only a plain vanilla web browser without any extra add –ons. A single page in a wiki website is referred to as a wiki page. While the entire collection of pages, which are usually well interconnected by hyperlinks is “the wiki”. A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated. Many wikis are open to alteration by the general public without requiring registration of user accounts. Private Wiki servers require user authentication to edit pages, and sometimes even to read them.

Advantages of Wiki

  • Free content
  • Collaborative Editing: Multiple users can edit and contribute to the same document, fostering collaboration and collective knowledge creation.
  • Allows you to put your own article
  • Ease of Use: Wikis are generally user-friendly, allowing individuals to create and edit content without extensive technical knowledge.
  • Allows the user to use links for more information
  • Provide answer from different resources to help the user to see it from different perspectives

Disadvantages of wiki
  • As anyone can make changes in your content, you can’t maintain consistency in your knowledge base
  • A wiki gives you limited user possibilities for searching for information
  • multiple users to edit content in real time, the platform is also prone to vandalism and spam.
